Long Island has something for everyone: boating, swimming, and fishing in our beautiful waters of Long Island Sound and the Atlantic; relaxing on our sandy beaches; touring our Gold Coast mansions; sipping world-class wines at our numerous vineyards; or taking advantage of our many sporting and recreational facilities. Historic Montauk Lighthouse reaches out to the Atlantic at the end of Long Island

Nightlife, beaches, sports, shopping, museums, history, farms, and wine country can all be enjoyed in this region's five distinctive areas: the North Shore, South Shore, Central Suffolk, South Fork and North Fork. Here, just minutes from New York City, you can explore fishing villages, historic lighthouses, white sandy beaches, wildlife preserves, and opulent Gold Coast mansions from a bygone era. You will also find among the many attractions major cultural and sporting centers; museums of history, art and science; guided cruises and railroad tours; and grand shopping malls.

The picturesque North Shore is known for the historic "Heritage Trail," which retains a unique character dating back to the time of George Washington. Bays, harbors, and quaint villages on Long Island Sound offer breathtaking views and sunsets, as well as attractions such as the Old Westbury Gardens arboretum, the Vanderbilt Museum and other "Gold Coast" mansions, and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's DNA Learning Center. Shoppers will relish the world-renowned designer boutiques in the sophisticated village of Great Neck.

The South Shore combines major cultural and sporting centers with more than 50 miles of ocean beach. Experience the thrills of thoroughbred racing at Belmont Park Racetrack, the excitement of NHL hockey games at the Nassau Coliseum, and concerts at the Westbury Music Fair and Jones Beach open-air theater. Tour arboretums and historical sites such as Old Bethpage Village Restoration—a pre-Civil War farm village with costumed interpreters, a blacksmith shop, and farm activities. Or shop at one of six indoor malls. But don’t miss the jewels of the South Shore, the pristine white sand beaches that stretch for miles along the barrier beach islands: Jones Beach State Park, Long Beach, and Fire Island National Seashore.

Central Suffolk, the true center of Long Island, blends natural beauty, pine forests, rivers, wetlands, beaches, and farmland with exciting man-made attractions. You can enjoy a riverboat cruise through the quiet wildlife refuge and preserved forests of the Pine Barrens. Or you can explore Splish Splash Water Park, Tanger Factory Outlet Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Okeanos Aquarium, and many other attractions.

Known throughout the world as "The Hamptons," the South Fork is a resort playground famous for miles of ocean beaches and rural maritime charm. Movie stars, writers, and artists share this haven with Shinnecock Native Americans, bay men, and potato farmers. Visit the historic Montauk Point Lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington; the chic shops and restaurants in Southhampton; the internationally known Parrish Art Museum; or the quaint, 18th century seafaring village of Sag Harbor. In Sag Harbor, you can tour the beautifully restored historic home of the custom master and his family and the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum in a Greek-Revival building housing scrimshaw, oil paintings, ship models, and other historical items associated with the industry.

The tranquility of its 350-year-old farming and fishing heritage has been preserved in the North Fork section, which offers low key charm, historical museums, vineyards, and roadside stands selling fine local produce. The Horton Point Lighthouse, the East End Seaport Maritime Museum, and the Railroad Museum of Long Island are worth a visit.

The natural beauty of this area, combined with exciting historic and cultural attractions, makes the Long Island region one of the most appealing places for all to enjoy. Let our Bed and Breakfast inns cap your enjoyment with a pleasant stay.
